The International Herald Tribune published a news story entitled ‘Malaysian opposition’s gains signal era of change’. That is exactly what the country does not need to hear right now. What we just experienced over the weekend is an event of change. A change in the political structure of Malaysia. To say that it is the beginning of a new era is very irresponsible. There is nothing to suggest that political change other than names and parties is taking place. We MUST wait and see. We MUST get to working to earn that headline.
The news report is actually very good in that it broke down the election results very well. It was a detailed analysis of the era of corruption and failures of the Barisan government, and the era of political struggles for the opposition. I’m just very uncomfortable with people talking about change like it has happened, or initiated. I for one, do not believe change has been initiated yet. I want to see the change happen. The door is WIDE OPEN now. But we must work, and we must wait.
An era is initiated only when a victory is achieved. And I know again, I sound like a party pooper, but the opposition coalition did not win this election. It’s just that Barisan lost. It was a protest vote. It’s the next election where people will be judged on credibility. The next election is the credibility vote. The REAL vote. That is when we decide if the ‘era of change’ is something we can claim.
When can we say it then, that the era of change has begun?
Tomorrow.

p/s Samyvellu not quitting as MIC president. He wants to ‘rebuild the party’. Every moment he stays on as party president, BN leaks more support.
